Mathematics is painting without the brush; painting is mathematics without the chalk

چکیده
Although at a superficial level mathematics and painting may be perceived as of very different nature, they are profoundly similar at a deep conceptual and functional level. The similarity goes far beyond immediate relationships such as the fact that geometry plays a significant role in both disciplines. The deep and significant kinship between math and painting becomes evident, when one considers that both disciplines are concerned with a symbolic description of aspects of the surrounding world. Both painting and mathematics struggle to express, by abstraction, the general behind the specific and to establish the essential and relevant. Both disciplines try to digest and analyse notions such as open versus closed, or figurative versus non-figurative, or finite versus infinite. Both activities make use of conjectures and explorations. It is important, not least for the teaching of mathematics, to realise that mathematics is fundamentally a discipline that is profoundly similar to the arts, music and humanities and in particular to painting. Mathematics will then not be considered a unique or alien discipline, but can be approached with playfulness and experimentation along the traditions used in the teaching of art, where rigor and exploration goes hand in hand.

Magic Brush – A Novel Digital Painting Environment
A long cherished dream of both scientists and artists since the birth of digital computers is to be able to use the computer to produce beautiful art. With the ever increasing power of modern computers, the computer as a serious artistic tool is now within reach for many. One major research area in computer art is emulating traditional art media for interactive painting or calligraphy. A brush ...
متن کاملOn the Effects of Haptic Display in Brush and Ink Simulation for Chinese Painting and Calligraphy
In this paper, we develop an interactive haptic system, which can be further aid for digital Chinese painting. When an artist is holding our force feedback device, one feels like holding a real painting brush with all the contact and bending forces, since the viscosity, friction, and the bending force of a brush touching the paper are simulated. First we derive a physical dynamics model as bend...
متن کاملA Virtual Chinese Hairy Brush Model for E-Learning
The increasing demands of education, reduction of study cost and study without location limitation have encouraged developers providing different types of learning and educational systems. This paper presents a virtual Chinese hairy brush painting environment which can be used as a digital tool for learning or creating Chinese calligraphy or Chinese painting. The framework comprises two compone...
متن کاملMathematics and painting
Mathematics and painting are interrelated in many ways. At a technical level mathematics can be used to enhance our appreciation of paintings. This was recently demonstrated beautifully by Taylor, Micolich, and Jones in their analysis of Jackson Pollock’s drip paintings, which led them to the conclusion that Pollock’s paintings are in a way gurative pictures. Relations also exist at a more ba...
متن کاملThe Unreasonable Effectivenss of Mathematics in the Natural Sciences
Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture, without appeal to any part of our weaker nature, without the gorgeous trappings of painting or music, yet sublimely pure, and capable of a stern perfection such as only the greatest art can show. The true spirit of delight, the exaltation, the sense of being more than Man, which i...
